Yanqing Tian’s research program is for developing new materials including sensors, two-photon absorbing materials, imaging probes, and drug delivery carriers for understanding cell biology and metabolism and also for cancer treatment. This study involves synthesis, characterization, and applications of the new materials in the biological research field. In order to meet the needs for single cell metabolism analysis, the research involves close collaborations among chemists, engineers and biologists. The sensors prepared are in the formats of either organic molecules or polymers, which are required to possess high selectivity and sensitivity. Extracellular sensors are also required to be shaped into the single cell analysis devices for high throughput analysis. For simultaneous analysis of a few parameters, multi-functional materials for dual pH and oxygen, dual oxygen and glucose, and triple analytes of pH-oxygen-glucose were prepared. Nanostructured materials for imaging, sensing and drug delivery were also developed in his research program.
