Welcome to the Biodesign Institute. Our mission is to improve health, protect lives, and sustain our planet. We are on ASU’s Tempe campus in a facility that is the largest single investment in research infrastructure in Arizona. We have the most comprehensive portfolio of research under one roof.
Lower Atrium - Building AInspired by the Salt River that used to run through the site, Biodesign’s lower level includes a rock garden filled with rocks from the local riverbed. This part of the facility is furthest away from the lightrail station and houses our more sensitive equipment.
AL1014 (Conference Room)Biodesign brings together bioscientists, engineers and advanced computing experts to work in teams. We believe this fusion of disciplines is the best way to address complex global problems. To collaborate with partners around the world, we meet via videoconference in conference rooms like this one.
1st Floor Atrium - SeatingThe facility is designed for collaboration, a key to our unique approach to cutting-edge research. A central atrium divides labs from office space, ensuring scientists cross the atrium several times a day. And our four levels encourage occupants to use the atrium staircases, ensuring frequent interaction.
Meldrum LabWe start projects that can have a large societal benefit. Our research spans: creating personalized medical diagnostics and treatments, outpacing infectious disease, cleaning the environment, developing alternative energy sources, and securing a safer world.
Lindsay LabInside the labs, equipment plugs into the ceiling and everything is on wheels. This allows for us to quickly change to accommodate growing projects and adjust to funding trends. We have an open-lab environment, making it possible for multiple teams to share the same area and collaborate on projects.
AuditoriumBiodesign frequently hosts seminars and events that are open to the community in our 90-seat auditorium. While we will always be part of ASU, we seek to be self-supported through federal grants, industry investments and philanthropic gifts.
3rd Floor ViewWe have dedicated our third floor to developing technologies for new vaccines. With each technology, we aim to make our vaccines low cost, heat stable, oral, and single dose. A new project is exploring a novel method for quicker development.
Biodesign Image WallThe Institute attracts research funding to the Valley and serves as a pipeline for innovations and the region’s biotech workforce. Biodesign’s image wall is a great spot to learn about our history and research impact.
Laser LabWith an aim toward enabling more efficient solar technology, Biodesign houses an ultrafast laser facility. The laser lab acts like a high-speed motion picture camera that can capture data from lightning-fast reactions
Office ViewNot a classroom facility, Biodesign is a working research lab with nearly 500 employees and volunteers. Our research focus on tackling global problems attracts workers from Arizona and around the globe.
Bio BistroJust inside our front door is the Bio Bistro. It serves sandwiches, salads, Indian and Mediterranean cuisine, and more Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Half-price espresso drinks are available on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 5 pm.
North East ExteriorAn external view of the Biodesign Main Entrance. To ensure that Biodesign researchers are able to continue to receive funding from certain governmental agencies, Biodesign is required to maintain a certain level of security. Visitors are asked to show photo identification and employees must use an iris scanner to obtain after-hours admittance.
North East ExteriorBuilding B opened in 2006 and sits on Tyler Road across from the METRO Rural Road Light Rail Station. Construction for Building B was funded through a special state legislative appropriation to help support an emerging bioscience industry.
Virtual LabFrom this seemingly ordinary computer lab, scientists are able to better understand disease-associated mutations, molecular evolution, and patterns of gene expression. They also create scientist tools for computational developmental biology and genetics analysis databases.
