The research interest of Chiu laboratory is to understand how membrane proteins can perform their varied functions and in particular how their structure, and hence their function, is affected by characteristics of the membrane environment and by specific lipids. We will focus on the structural basis of the receptor complex related to the axonal regeneration and how it is modulated by lipids. The research will take advantage in both electron crystallography and single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) combined with other biochemical and biophysical approaches. In parallel, we are also interested in improving the current cryo-EM methodology to optimize its use in biological applications.
