“You folks are doing fabulous, world-changing work here.” -Jude LaCava

Guest blogger and local Fox10 sportscaster Jude LaCava shares with us his personal story of how he became involved in supporting game-changing Biodesign cancer research.

I live in a world of games as a sports reporter.  Covering athletic contests is like covering the toy department of life. But my passion is what really matters in life and that is life itself.

How much longer are you going to sit on the sidelines while members of your family, your friends and people all around you continue to lose their battle to cancer?

You could say those questions have haunted me for most of my life from my teenage years when the most important person in my life, my mom, lost her battle to breast cancer.

We must recognize this story is our story. It is hard to imagine anyone who hasn’t been touched by cancer.

When my sister Sandy and wife Jill brought up the idea of making a difference in the fight against cancer, we discussed the question of finding a place where there is the greatest need. Where could we help the most was a small group in the form of a small foundation.

The answer was obvious. Bring people in the field of cancer research together. Join the fast growing movement of open science. Find better ways to bring better treatment options to cancer patients. Find the best technology that would allow oncologists to find more effective and more accurate cancer treatments.

And on the front line battle against cancer- find a cancer test that has a chance to detect this horrible disease before it ever becomes stage one and that, my friends, is the essence of what the Dorothy Foundation is attempting to become.

You can hear more about open science and the promise of big data in cancer research, from two big idea leaders: Marty Tenenbaum, M.D., Cancer Commons and Joshua LaBaer, M.D., Ph.D., Biodesign Institute at ASU, in what promises to be a thought-provoking discussion. The event is 11:00am - 1:00pm, Mar 19, 2015, at the  Phoenix Country Club. Jude LaCava will moderate the conversation.
