This knowledge will be applied to pressing issues, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list\">\n<li>Evolutionary changes of disease-causing organisms, including the emergence of antibiotic resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The establishment of harmful populations such as blue-green algal blooms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The effects of mutagens and cellular errors on the long-term well-being of populations of species, including our own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The evolutionary consequences of global environmental change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The development of new strategies for biomass production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Using approaches ranging from whole-genome sequencing, to proteomics and analysis of protein structure, to mathematical theory and computational analysis, to experimental evolution, the CME is exploring a wide range of issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of our specialties include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list\">\n<li>Microbial evolution experiments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of predictive mathematical theory for evolution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding long-term evolutionary processes from population-level genome sequencing projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantifying the rates at which errors accumulate within cells, as well as their causes and consequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gaining insights into the origins of new organelles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploiting knowledge on the interface between biophysics, bioenergetics, structural biology, and evolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading mt-6\"><strong>Faculty members<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div id=\"pf-directory\" class=\"pfpeople-web-directory\" style=\"\" data-searchType=\"people\" data-pagination=\"10\" data-ids=\",kehu4:338780,pjiang18:338780,jpmccutc:338780,ksamerot:338780,nwadhwa3:338780,jgwidema:338780,mlynch11:338780,agonz591:338780\" data-alphaFilter=\"false\" data-grid=\"false\" data-deptIds=\"1466\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading mt-4\"><strong>Open access to \u2018The Origins of Cellular Architecture\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We have taken on one of the last uncharted fields in evolution: integrating evolutionary biology with cell biology.
