Student Travel Grant Program


The Biodesign Travel Grant program provides Biodesign Institute students the opportunity to travel to professional scientific conferences for academic and professional development.

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible to apply for a travel grant, applicants must obtain approval from their Center Director and:

  • Work in a Biodesign Center with a Biodesign faculty advisor/mentor.
  • Actively participate by either presenting a poster, offering an oral presentation or some other participation at said professional conference.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at Arizona State University.
  • Attend proposed professional scientific conference prior to completion of ASU degree program.
  • Complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP) through Science Careers.

Funding and Allowable Expenses:
Travel grants must be used to cover allowable expenses to a professional scientific conference approved by your Center Director. Allocation of funds is based on program availability.

  • $500 maximum award
  • Allowable expenses include airfare, fuel/mileage if driving your own vehicle, ground transportation (taxi, shuttle services, train, bus), hotel/lodging, meals, event registration and poster printing (must be printed by the Biodesign Institute Marketing and Communications Department).
  • The Travel Grant will NOT cover the following expenses: rental cars, phone calls, internet access charges, outside vendor poster printing or any expense prohibited by university policy.
  • Expenses paid with credit card or check are reimbursable but expenses paid with cash are NOT.

Program Dates: Spring 2019 - Fall 2019

Applications may be submitted up to six months prior to a professional scientific conference. The Faculty Selection Committee will review applications as outlined on the schedule below. Dates are subject to change and are based on the availability of funds.

What is an Individual Development Plan (IDP)?
The Biodesign Institute utilizes the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) My IDP Science Careers to help individuals develop professionally, research career paths and set career goals. 

myIDP provides:

  • "Exercises to help you examine your skills, interests, and values
  • A list of 20 scientific career paths with a prediction of which ones best fit your skills and interests
  • A tool for setting strategic goals for the coming year, with optional reminders to keep you on track
  • Articles and resources to guide you through the process"

Tips for Applicants:

When writing a personal statement, it is helpful to include the information below:

  • Indicate whether you are presenting a poster or oral presentation at the conference. If not, what presentations are you attending that benefit your academic and professional development? 
  • Are you sitting on a panel or serving another role at the conference (facilitator, etc.)?
  • How does this fit into your academic program? What are your post-graduation goals? How does this conference assist you in meeting those goals? 
  • How will you professionally benefit from participating in the program? How will your research outcomes positively impact the Biodesign Institute? 
  • Indicate how you plan on spending the grant (hotel, transportation, registration). 

All applications will be reviewed for consideration by the Travel Grant Faculty Committee.  To be considered for a Travel Grant an application must be submitted prior to your travel.

Applications must include: 

  • Personal statement detailing how this professional conference will benefit your academic and professional development; 
  • Your Individual Development Plan (IDP); and
  • Resume/CV.
