Research Analyst

Job Description

The Biodesign Center for Fundamental and Applied Microbiomics is seeking to hire a Research Analyst in Dr. Efrem Lim's lab (https://viromelab.org). The Lim lab is conducting SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance studies by using next-generation sequencing to decode the SARS-CoV-2 virus genome of COVID-19 cases. This information is used to track how the virus is evolving and identify new variants. Variant mutations may affect immunity, diagnostics and disease severity. Hence, genomic sequencing surveillance has important implications for public health responses.

The candidate will be joining an experienced bioinformatics team to analyze next-generation sequencing data of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences and study virus evolution. These data are used in a real-time surveillance program to track the virus.

Essential Duties

  • Process and analyze next-generation sequencing data
  • Review and submit SARS-CoV-2 sequences to data repositories
  • Analyze SARS-CoV-2 variants
  • Assist in preparation of data for manuscripts, reports and scientific presentations (e.g. tables, figures and graphs of research results)
  • Assist with server and data maintenance, and duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or relevant field, and three years of experience in research or information analysis; or, Master's degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or relevant field, and one year of experience in research or information analysis.
  • Proficient in use of Linux and HPC environment
  • Experience with Python and R
