A world-renowned leader in the field, Dr. Rittmann approaches environmental biotechnology from the perspective of “managing microbial communities that provide services to society.”  This is achieved through cross-disciplinary and team-based research in the areas of engineering, science, sustainability, and biological design.  Research topics include fundamental studies and practical applications such as microbial electrochemical cells (MXCs), microbial photobioenergy, and bioremediation.  In order to make “research meet practice,” Dr. Rittmann’s research teams integrate microbial ecology, chemistry, and process kinetics through mathematical modeling, and they regularly partner with practitioners.
